How can a person achieve access to justice when there is no attorney to be found? This episode of Stairway to ATJ focuses on the phenomenon of “Legal Deserts,” which exist when there are only a few attorneys to serve a great geographic expanse. Co-hosts Mia Kontnik and Anthony Pereira sit down with Jennifer (Jen) Cuesta from Colorado Legal Services and Julie Katz from Katz Law LLC in Salida to discuss the impact legal deserts have on access to justice. Julie and Jen describe the difficulties of practicing in greater and rural Colorado, as well as how they are working to overcome them.
If you or someone you know needs legal assistance, they can contact Colorado Legal Services by calling the intake number: (303) 837-1321 or visiting their website coloradolegalservices.org.
This episode also features Ashley Staab of the CBA in the Pro Bono Corner to discuss the Colorado Lawyers for Colorado Veterans clinic.
The episode wraps up with Eyes on ATJ, where Mia and Anthony discuss important and enduring access to justice issues. These include legal bots, justice busses, and more. It’s Our Turn asks attorneys to give back and an easy way to get involved is by completing a profile on Succession to Service.
